The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between The International Centre for Sustainable Environment Promotion (TICSEP) and The Department of Food and Agriculture, Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly (DFA-SW) marks a significant step towards sustainable development in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality. This partnership is founded on the mutual goal of promoting sustainable agriculture production, enhancing climate change preparedness, and advancing food security within the region. Both entities, recognizing the urgency of these issues, have voluntarily committed to collaborating on common projects and sharing resources to achieve their shared objectives.
In the face of escalating global population needs and demands, the over-exploitation of natural resources has exacerbated the adverse impacts of climate change worldwide. Ghana, like many other countries, grapples with the consequences of climate change, particularly affecting its smallholder farmers, who play a crucial role in ensuring food security. Climate variability, the resurgence of pests and diseases, and deteriorating soil quality threaten the livelihoods of these rural communities. Prevailing farming practices further exacerbate environmental degradation, hindering efforts to safeguard environmental quality.
TICSEP, a non-governmental organization committed to climate change advocacy and community empowerment, and DFA-SW, a state agency dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture, are poised to address these challenges. Through their partnership, they aim to implement climate-smart agricultural techniques, enhance community resilience, and foster sustainable agricultural practices within the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality.
The MOU outlines a comprehensive agenda aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and climate resilience in the region. Key objectives include promoting gender inclusivity in agricultural practices, raising awareness about climate change, enhancing community understanding of its impacts on agriculture and livelihoods, and providing training on improved farming methods. Additionally, the partnership aims to encourage organic farming, enhance post-harvest management practices, and diversify farm businesses to build resilience. By supporting gardening projects in schools, families, and youth groups, the partners seek to instill a culture of sustainable agriculture from an early age. Ultimately, the MOU underscores the commitment of both organizations to ensure food security, promote good nutrition, and foster healthy living while empowering women and youth in sustainable agriculture production.
